Achieve Academy for Adults offers a comprehensive range of services designed to develop independence, build practical skills, and enhance the quality of life for our clients. Our integrated approach addresses the unique needs of adults with I/DD through specialized environments that promote learning, growth, and community connection.
The center offers comprehensive programming, including life skills training, vocational preparation, social engagement, and more.
Computer Skills Training
We provide clients with essential digital literacy skills relevant to today’s connected world. Clients receive instruction through various methods, including but not limited to:
- Cell phone safety
- Computer-based programs
- Video modeling demonstrations
- Guided internet research activities
- Peer modeling opportunities
- Real-world setting practice
These represent some of the approaches we use to develop technology skills. Our computer training program regularly incorporates new technologies and applications to ensure clients develop relevant digital competencies for both independence and employability.
Vocational Training
Comprehensive vocational training programs help clients develop marketable skills that translate directly to employment opportunities. Training focuses on both hard and soft workplace skills, including communication, time management, task completion, and job-specific abilities that prepare clients for meaningful employment in the community.
Community Integration
Community integration is a key component of Achieve Academy’s foundation. Clients participate in community outings regularly. Staff members attend all community outings with clients. Some community outings may include the following:
- Grocery store
- Goals include personal choice, nutrition, budgeting, socialization, navigation with and without a cart, bagging, and personal finances (functional math).
- Library
- Goals include personal choice, following rules, socialization, and time management.
- Community offerings: theater, craft fairs, activities, community gardens
- Brookdale Community College offerings: shows, activities, socialization
- Local Museums: Monmouth, InfoAge, Allaire, Insectropolis, etc.
- Recreation activities: movie theater, bowling, skating, arcade, iPlay
- Goals include personal choice, turn-taking, following rules, socialization, and budgeting.
- Local YMCA
- Goals include personal choice, movement and wellness, socialization, and following rules.
- Eateries: coffee and donuts, sit-down lunch, pizza, fast food, etc.
- Goals include personal choice, socialization, independent ordering, budgeting, bill-paying, and tipping.
- Shopping: craft store, Costco, etc.
- Goals include personal choice, socialization, store navigation, budgeting, and following a list.
- County parks
- Goals include personal choice, health and wellness (movement/sports, picnic foods), socialization, decision-making (appropriate clothing and outerwear choice, hiking vs. organized games, etc.), and public transportation methods.
Personal Financial Literacy
Personal financial literacy equips participants with essential money management skills for independence. Through engaging workshops and practical exercises, they learn to create budgets, understand banking services, track expenses, recognize financial risks, and make informed decisions about spending and saving.
Social Skills
Social skills training helps our clients build meaningful connections with others through structured practice and coaching. They develop conversation skills, appropriate boundaries, conflict resolution strategies, and teamwork abilities that enhance their confidence in various social settings and foster lasting relationships.
Daily Living
Activities of daily living instruction focus on practical skills needed for self-sufficiency and independent living. Participants learn cooking, cleaning, personal hygiene, transportation navigation, shopping, medication management, and home maintenance through hands-on training tailored to their unique abilities and goals.
Individual Choice
Individual choice empowers participants to take ownership of their lives by expressing preferences and making decisions that align with their personal values. This person-centered approach encourages self-advocacy, builds decision-making confidence, and respects autonomy.
